Queen Charlottes Fishing Update
MV Salmon Seeker - August 16, 2009The weather is still nice. We have a huge high over the area as we look at the barometer. It is overcast but that is very good news for our guests, as I mentioned before.
Our Sun Microsystems group is here and, as usual, they have organized a fishing derby. This develops a sense of competition between our guests and accordingly with their guides.
They brought in 29 Chinook and 36 Coho, including an incredible 22 lb. Coho caught by Charlott Hart (TX), earning her Masterfisherman status.
We also have some new members in the Captain's Club:
- Lloyd Switzer of ON (32 lbs. Chinook)
- Blair Miller of BC (58 lbs. Halibut)
- Dean Gillespie of AB (17 lbs. Coho)
- J.D. Kinsey of AB.
- Ron O’Dwyer of BC (15 lbs. Coho)

Queen Charlottes Fishing Update
MV Salmon Seeker - August 15, 2009The weather today started with overcast skies and smooth sea. This is welcome weather, as it protects our guests from the heat of the day.
A number of our guests have not been to the Salmon Seeker before. The impression one gets from them is total admiration to this beautiful area with quality fish and breath-taking scenery and fantastic customer service. I mention this to invite those who have never experienced fishing with us before, to act fast before all the vacant slots in the coming trips are full.
The fishing is just awesome. We just had one of our guests, Shannon Moench, catch a huge 235 lb. halibut this morning. Everybody is trying to avoid Coho as they are everywhere and every time the bait goes down they grab it fast. As I always say this is a prime fishing area. So, come and try it for yourselves.
The total catch of the day included 41 Chinook and 38 Coho.
The following were awarded Captain’s Club status with a pin:
- Marty Empringham of AB (50 lbs. Halibut)
- Kevin Salvatori of BC (30 lbs. Chinook)
- Terry Wells of ON (73 lbs. Halibut)
- Marty Empringham of AB (50 lbs. Halibut)
- Ron O’Dwyer of BC (34 lbs. & 30 lbs Chinook)
- Jim Mikolsh of BC (30 lbs. Chinook & 15 lbs. Coho)

Queen Charlottes Fishing Update
MV Salmon Seeker - August 13, 2009Today was a gorgeous day: the wind was light and the sea was less than three feet and sunny. This is not always a good sign to have a warm day while wearing the heavy gear. Even if one takes the top off, still it is warm. The only conciliation was the fishing was very good and the scenery was exceptional. Most of our guests were maxed out on their quota since yesterday. So, they just fill the vacant spots.
The following anglers were awarded Captain’s Club status today:
- Ken Cox of AB (52 lb. halibut)
- John Metcalfe of BC (40 lb. Chinook)
- Eric Bruener of WA (31 lb. Chinook)
- Andy Bellings of WA (37 lb. Chinook)
- Dean Pearson of WA (15 lb. Coho)
- Tony Lupo of WA (74 lb. halibut)

Queen Charlottes Fishing Update
MV Salmon Seeker - August 12, 2009The weather is much better today. The wind subsided to about ten knots from the southeast. The sea is less than three feet. The fishing is strong and most of our guests have their quota for the day and some returned early, others opted to stay out for catch and release.
The only issue our guests have is there are too many Coho. It is sometimes annoying as they have to be careful with their bait as they grab it as soon as you put it over the side. Still, a very nice problem to have.
It’s also been a great day for wildlife: a pod of killer whales was sighted in the early morning and another one around ten o’clock. This is always considered a nice treat.
We have three new halibut Masterfishermen today: George Rechner of AB caught a 125 lb. halibut, Eric Bruener caught a 123 pounder, and Andy Billings landed a 111 lb. hali.
We also have a few new members in the Captain’s Club:
- George Rechner of AB (30 lbs. Chinook)
- Theodore Faber of BC (58 lbs. Halibut)
- Hiro Kagiyama of CA (30 lbs. Chinook)
- Dean Pearson of WA (65 lbs. Halibut)
- Eric Bruener of WA (31 lbs. Chinook)
- Kyle Acohido of WA (50 lbs. Halibut)
- George Szczezynski of NH
- Demon Vickers of WA (50 lbs. Halibut)
- George Sargent of MN (97 lbs. Halibut)
- Tony Lupo of WA (77 lbs. Halibut)
Nice work, anglers.

Absolute Software takes on the Queen Charlottes
MV Salmon Seeker - August 9, 2009The change of weather in the Queen Charlotte area is rapid. In early morning the wind was blowing 6 kts. from the south, then it picked up slightly this afternoon to 15 to 20 kts. Still we had about 3 to 6 feet waves with drizzle and some fog patches. This is considered a good fishing weather.
Our present group of guests is the Absolute Software group, and they have arranged a fishing derby between themselves, that is why one will notice that the interest is concentrated in specific species of fish.
Their efforts netted them 39 Chinook, 18 Coho and five halis today. Brian Youngblood of Texas nabbed a 103 lb. halibut, earning himself Masterfisherman status.
Jose Miller (WV) grabbed a 40 pound Chinook, and David Johnson landed a 57 lb. halibut, earning both a space in the Captain's Club.

More great salmon fishing in the QCI
MV Salmon Seeker - August 8, 2009Hello anglers,
It’s Captain Zak, back on the great ship M/V Salmon Seeker.
The weather today is still overcast with some drizzle, which is good under the present relatively high temperatures. The fishing is still going strong and our guests are very happy about it.
The amount of total catch of the day tells the whole story: 39 Chinook, 33 Coho and an assortment of bottomfish.
The following guests were awarded Captain’s Club status for their efforts (along with their nice, big fish!):
- David Johnson of IL (30 lb. Chinook)
- Patrick McGowan of CA (34 lb. Chinook; he also caught a 30 lb. Chinook yesterday)
- Glyn Lewis of IL (30 lb. Chinook)
- Craig Clark of BC (30 lb. Chinook)

Morgan Marinello, double Master Fisherman
MV Salmon Seeker - August 7, 2009The big ones are back! Or rather: We are back where the big ones hang out!
The northwest gales have finally relented and our current group are taking full advantage with six new Master Fisherman presentations over the last two days. Morgan Marinello was one, with the ultimate double header, a 100 lb halibut and a 51 lb Chinook. About 15 other fish were either hali over 50 lbs or Chinook over 30. Good times!
This group also produced some of the largest Coho of the season with Craig Bennett topping the list with a 15 pounder.
Weather looks fairly settled for the next few days so it is likely that this kind of fishing will be in store for the next few groups.
Good luck,
Captain Ian

Queen Charlottes Fishing Update
Queen Charlotte Islands Fishing Resorts - August 3, 2009Northwest gales have kept our fishing inside Kano Inlet for the last week and consequently Chinook action has been a bit limited. Chris Bridges’ 30 pounder won last trip’s trophy and a 25 pounder is currently the leader for this trip with a day and a half to go. This doesn’t mean that the big ones aren’t still around, it just means that we aren’t presently able to get to the usual spots. The same circumstances apply to halibut fishing although a few of the “chicken“ variety are still showing up on the board.
Coho are saving the day at the moment and they have moved into the Inlet in numbers. While they are not usually accorded the same status as the big Tyees, they are still a great sport fish and a real thrill for our novice anglers. Not bad on the barbeque either!
No significant change in the weather until mid week. Warm and sunny in the Inlet and blowing 30 knots outside.
