First 50 pounder of the season

MV Salmon Seeker - June 13, 2009

Our first trip of the season ended with a bang in the form of a beautiful 50 lb Chinook landed by Carol Frahm, earning her the honour of the first 50 pounder of the season and also the trip trophy. She also scooped the pot in the informal derby organized by the group.

Chinook action was steady for most boats, although some dry spells were experienced. The big one came from Kelp Bay just a few minutes from the ship thus proving once again that pounding north or south of the inlet is not always necessary.

Mark Zagar and Tim Erdos’s experience also serves to illustrate the point. They left the ship at 5:30 and returned at 8:30 with their limit of halibut, including one weighing 156 lbs. Maybe we should be promoting half day trips to the Salmon Seeker!

Weather continues to be very favourable. A bit of low cloud and drizzle in the mornings and brightening up to sunshine in the afternoons has been the pattern. No winds over 20 knots and no seas over 2 metres. Long may it last.
