First two masterfisherman of the season!

MV Salmon Seeker - June 4, 2007

BC salmon fishing lodgeThe weather is great, moderate winds and the sea was 3 to 6 feet. One word could be said about today’s fishing: fantastic!

Our guests saw a humpback whale in the area but Matt and Leo Vanlear are still talking about the dolphins the encountered yesterday as they were swimming next to their boat and actually they touched them with their hands.

Stan Arksey of BC was awarded a Masterfisherman’s hat for 135 lb. halibut that he caught about 13:30.

Courtney Boner of Alberta was also awarded her Masterfisherman’s hat for a 100 lb. halibut caught about 07:30.

Not to be outdone, Jim Rose topped out a great haul of salmon with a 37 lb. Chinook. All in all it was a great day for our guests enjoying their favourite sport with a crew that do their best to serve them.

BC halibut fishing lodgeSome more nautical trivia: where did the expression “gone by the board” come from?

During the time of wooden ships, sailors referred to their sailing vessel as “the board.” We still use this language when we board a ship or are on board. “Outboard” is outside the boat, while “inboard” is inside. When a sailing ship’s mast is broken in a storm and could not be salvaged, the captain would order the ropes holding it to be cut, letting it drift away or “go by the board.”
