The M. V. Salmon Seeker, anchored in Kano Inlet on the west side of the Queen Charlotte Islands, has been on fire as anglers can't manage to take a break from the intense action - as soon as they drop their lines, fish hit. And not just any fish either - the springs are averaging in 35-45 lb range. Guides who have fished this area for many years have said this is the best fishing they've ever seen. The Queen Charlotte Islands are one of the only places in the world where anglers release tyee salmon, knowing there are bigger fish out there just waiting to be caught.
Anglers are also battling feisty Coho in the high teens with one angler successfully landing a 20 lb monster. 'Barn door' halibut have also been a common sight recently as anglers are bringing these beasts to the boat. One lucky angler caught a 52 lb spring and followed it up with a 100 lb halibut on the following day!
Just ask Jean Burch of Charlotte Hall, Maryland who became a Masterfisherman on her first salmon trip. "We had been catching and releasing for several hours, keeping one here and there, and it was my turn to fish, and when this one hit, he took off, peeling out line. He ran and I reeled, I reeled and he ran, then he turned and jumped and we got a good look at him. 'Jean, we gotta have him! We gotta have him!' cried my husband. After numerous runs and dives and reels, we got him to the boat. Back at the Salmon Seeker they put my fish on the scale, and we whooped when the pointer stopped at 56! What a fish!" Congratulations Jean!
